More Than Two-Thirds of U.S. Voters Now Support Cannabis Legalization

The results of a new cannabis legalization poll are out, and the level of support for ending cannabis prohibition has never been greater.

A number of polls have found that a majority of United States voters support legalization, but the recent poll numbers released by the Center for American Progress are truly historic.

According to the poll, an inspiring 68% of respondents expressed support for cannabis legalization.

Participants were asked, “Do you support or oppose the legalization of marijuana?” and 40% strongly supported the public policy change and 28% somewhat supported the move.

Only 17% of poll participants stated that they strongly oppose cannabis legalization.

The data shows that cannabis reform has bipartisan support

The Center for American Progress broke down the data and below are some noteworthy items from the poll:

  • 77 percent of Democrats support legalization
  • 57 percent of Republicans support legalization
  • 69 percent of women support legalization
  • 72 percent of African Americans support legalization

With 57% support among self-identified Republicans in the poll and an overwhelming level of support on the other side of the aisle, cannabis legalization is a unifying political issue.

NORML Deputy Director Paul Armentano said this in a press release sent to Green Flower:

“In an era of increasing partisanship, public support for ending cannabis criminalization is an issue that crosses party lines. More and more, elected officials – and those who wish to be elected – must acknowledge that advocating in favor of marijuana policy reform is a political opportunity, not a political liability.”

Center for American Progress’ poll builds on other poll results

The Center for American Progress’ cannabis legalization poll results adds to a trend of increasing support for cannabis legalization.

Quinnipiac University released its annual cannabis legalization poll results in April of this year and found 63% of U.S. voters support legalization.

In Gallup’s annual cannabis legalization poll, which it has been conducting since 1969, a record 64% of participants supported cannabis legalization.

This week’s poll results showed not only a large increase in overall support compared to Gallup’s poll, it also found a larger increase in support among Republicans (Gallup showed 51% support).

It doesn’t take a mathematician to see that support for legalization is trending upwards and that is likely to continue with legalization succeeding in several states now.

Share these poll results with your lawmakers

If your state has not already legalized cannabis, share these poll results with members of your legislature.

You can use a very user-friendly platform that our friends at NORML have created to help you find out what is going on in your state.

Everyone needs to contact their federal lawmakers and urge them to support federal descheduling and point out how popular cannabis legalization is according to polling.

If your federal lawmaker is already on board, thank them for their support and urge them to share with their peers exactly why they support reform.

We need to all do our part to help ensure that future generations will not have to deal with the harms of cannabis prohibition!
